Shanghai conference

During 24 Nov - 27 Nov I went to Shanghai together with Adlan & Sasha (my bosses) for the Adtech conference and meeting... If you want me to use one word to describe it, NICE!

During the 1st day, we were arrived there around 7am, after check in and sleep until 11am, then we went to start our tour at Shanghai...

Taikong Road, (泰康路)
Shanghai was about 11 degree Celsius the moment we arrive there, (freeze me up!)
With Adlan guide, our 1st destination of the day in Shanghai was Taikong Road, (泰康路)- which is one of the famous shopping spot in Shanghai... old building, narrow lane...

My favorite game!!! If not running out of time, I would ask for a friendly match...

The Bund - 外滩
After Taikong Rd, we went to The Bund to enjoy the view of Shanghai skyscraper...

Omegakenny@Shanghai (damn cool & COLD!!!)

Is that the future of China? I damn like the view, it make me feel proud of it!

Adlan busy & call someone in the office!

Keep calling...

Finally... Zzzz....

While Sasha enjoy his photograph...

Yu Yuan - 豫园/城隍庙

During that night we were walk for around 3km from The Bund to Yu Yuan/Cheng Huang Miao, very famous place for tourist, but the food there was nice with reasonable price! Traditioanal Qing Dynasty's building make me felt like I'm travel via time machine!

The Adtech:Shanghai Conference 2008
That's why I'm there, company spend around RM9000 for each person to participate in this conference, every session(1 hour) cost around RM1300! It's damn expensive end up I intrude into some of the conference hall even I don't have the delegate pass(no choice, I don't want to wait outside and waste the opportunity)! But after attended those talk, I think it's worthwhile. Indeed, it blow my mind! They share their idea and experience, furthermore the conversations and "battle" between those speakers were SO GREAT!(Impressive!) Inspired me and taught me a few lessons! As the end of the session I quickly step up to the stage, have a chat and exchange my name card with them but anyhow sometimes I failed because the queue quite long, or sometimes they already finished distributed their name card and they rushing to other place! Anyway, at least they got my name card and knowing what's my company doing, hehe....

Inside the conference...

In there, must always try to get to know as many people as I can, every single conversation with them was consider as an opportunity. Nevertheless, those participants there are very initiative too! They are very keen to know each other, seek for the opportunity to collaborate with other company. I have spoke to some of the CEO of there, like nanamimi.com, NetBooster, etc. They are willing to look for the potential partner inside Mainland of China or oversea. Besides that, there are big ads company like AdChina, one thing disappointed was they seems like don't really interested on our company since we do not have "a lot" traffic on our site now, fine, please don't compare China & Malaysia! Anyway, in one day they will know they are wrong!(a bit emo!) China web and mobile industry is growing drastically, damn fast! Most of them have strategy planning for post-Olympic ads campaign (web and mobile). Now they have their eye on Shanghai World Expo 2010!

Inside the Taxi

Most of the people I meet can’t really speak English (except for those in the conference and hotel). As what I have researched less than 1% of China people can speak English. I’m very curious of that if they hop online which is their favorite site, I got the answer after have the conversation with a young taxi driver, and he’s about 24 years old with secondary school education level. Chat using QQ IM messenger, surfing sina.com and search using baidu.com already become his daily activities (that’s most of the Chinese did), normally after work he will online for at least 5 hours, and sometimes might online for the whole day during weekend. By using QQ, he gets to know friends from Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing, and other province. The reason why he doesn’t chat with other country people (English speaker) is because he’s weak in English. He knew Google but seldom use it because he prefers Baidu for search.
Google seems like still can’t monopolize the China market, have to localize their site to target China users?
As the trend of Web Globalization, communication and language barrier become the key factors to stop China netizens to visit English site, language translation software will be a very useful tool for them. They need multi-language chat room or IM messenger (with translation function), and they need an Internet platform which would help them to overcome their language barrier while they surfing those English site (That’s what citcat.com working on now!). Some of the popular online translation tools using by China people like Google Translate, netat.net(金桥翻译) and China Yahoo Babel fish(中国雅虎宝贝鱼) are not as good as they expected due to slow and not accurate.

Experience their local life...

Early morning Wednesday, Sasha and I walk down to the lane and their wet market. We order one of the local food - “Shandong Pan Cake” from a stall, at that moment there were polices patrol around that area and found out we are not local people, they question us and when they found out we are from Malaysia, those polices praise the hawker and were saying “您的食物上国际了,好样的,咱们中国人的骄傲!” (“Your food goes international, you done very well, proud of China!” I translate it in English), they keep repeating the words until those crowd were paid attention to them.
China people felt very proud of when other country gets to know them. Like to express themselves, is that the reason why they got most bloggers in the world?

ShanDong Pan Cake - 山东煎饼

They have very high awareness of the event in Shanghai, for example the World Expo 2010 which going to held at Shanghai, all of them knew about it and proud of it. We saw a lot of construction in Shanghai is because of World Expo 2010. After Beijing Olympic 2008, it would be another big event to China.
I can still recall the similar thing happen in Malaysia during the last election on 8 March. Because of intellectual curiosity and people want to get the latest news from internet, a lot of people around me who never online before start to buy computer and register Streamyx. Moreover, those existing online user they were spent more hours online to explore for more news. All the sudden Internet news becomes a hot topic everywhere. As refer from what happened to Malaysia could be a mirror of what’s going to be happen in Shanghai, more user go online!

My last day at Shanghai!
My flight back to KL at 4.10pm, and I gotto check in before 2pm. Early morning I wake up around 7am, after settled my baggage, I quickly go and start my "independent" tour at Shanghai and buy my wife some clothes. Before I start my "journey", I have asked a few staffs in the hotel about the best place for shopping... the underground shopping mall nearby People Square, NanJing East Rd,hundred eight square, the mall nearby Pearl Tower, etc. Anyway, my final decision was People Square since I haven't step on thereI take Shanghai Metro (Shanghai rapid-transit system, it is cheaper, more convenient and better than our LRT!)

Very crowd in Shanghai Metro platform...

Inside Shanghai Metro - I feel like I'm sardine!

Roaming around People Square - 人民广场
There got more than 20 exit of People Square's Station, I was hoping I get the right exit to the underground shopping center

Yunnan Road - 云南路

After walk for 15mins, I reach Yunnan Rd unintentionally, there got a lot of delicious food! During that day there have cold front, I was roaming around while there was extremely cold outside, wind keep blowing on me and I feel like my whole body gonna freeze up! Without having any food in my stomach, I can't cope with that cold anymore, I quickly get into a restaurant to have my breakfast. I tried one of their renowned food - Shanghai Bee noddle, damn nice!

Underground Shopping Center

After my breakfast, I go find out where's the "mystery" underground shopping center. About 20mins, I reach that underground shopping center.

Maglev - 磁浮
Top speed I got that day was 430km/h!!!

In the flight - back to KL

New Parking Rate!

Today company have a voting process, vote for who are the "lucky 3" out of 22 applicants to get the season parking at Mid Valley City. Everyone also hope that he will be selected to get RM60 monthly parking rate(now the parking rate is juz RM1/day about RM20 monthly), who are not selected will need to pay RM154++ for the monthly parking start from next month.

Yes for sure it's not a problem for who with high income, less impact... some staff complaining company should subsidize while some other blame the Mid Valley Management... Anyway, for those who can't even get the season parking rate, definitely demotivated, I really can smell the sense of dissatisfaction among them and employees morale drop...!!!

I'm get shocked when i realized I need to pay RM100 extra juz for the parking... upset, disappointed, then what can I do? plan to come by motorcycle but it's more dangerous compare to car, my little cousin n her bf, n my sister bf juz conduct an accident when ride on motorcycle last week... plan to take public transport but that definitely not convenient... then i got no choice to come by my car n pay RM154 monthly, no other option n juz keep accept it!

After deduct all the expense from my salary, juz left 10% for saving, how can I plan my future, plan to marry but no money, god damn ironic....!

From Wap to the Web

Few days ago just get a call from Jobstreet, a new mobile solution company request me to work over there, that’s a European-based corporate which located at CyberJaya. I'm wondering why they still interested on me (a bit proud :)), I’m almost a year never updated my resume on Jobstreet already. They persuade me with attractive salary, almost 65% more from my current one, I though jobstreet always keep P&C with this issue, y they still tell me that figure?? I’m suspecting…

Think and think over… Last time when I migrate from Shabox was definitely a big change for me; from a wap specialist to web master; from senior system analyst to now analyst programmer; from 90% managerial job scope to now 90% extreme coder; from high pay to current salary… If there was no problem with the takeover process by Monster-Mob, UK. There for sure a bright future for me… but now all is over, as I always said, life is juz like a dream. I’m juz jump out from wap to web, but now someone ask me to go in wap again, that’s not an issue for me, but juz feel a bit ridiculous.

Although last time all the task are extreme critical, even company ever can lost 30k in just a minute due to minor mistake made by some newbie, but I still can cope with that and have time to think, brainstorming, improve engines, manage my team well and relax…, but now… even take lunch I also have to rush, somemore I have to make even pixel minor changes to web site always, everyday stuck in trial-and-error process (no time to test on standard approach), no time for brain to rest and no time for me to put my hand under the table even at home, and “relax” is almost impossible word for me. although I don’t like it initially but at least from there I build up my strong web development basic. Fortunately now I got a new staff to help me up, Mr.Z.., have to train him more before he can handle task independently.

Luckily Mr.A appreciate my effort and always train me with some web knowledge(although juz put some books on my table and ask me to read!) but it's really helpful, when I'm realized that I’m creating one of the amazing web portal in the world now, then… am I still need to consider for another higher pay position?

a thought about Ruby on Rails

ruby on rails... a agile programming language which will skip
compilte step duringdevelopment, others like java, .net, C
all need to compile b4 it's run, ruby juz need modify-run,
while others need modify-compile-run. may be this good for
developer when their development in progress, but izit good
for execute for user, it will definitely slow down the
running time. or what i think is ruby can juz use modify-run
model for development, but when really launching it go
through comilation step, then may be it will solve the
problem, but dunno whether ruby framework design have this
kind of flexibility or not. like flash development, .swf to
.exe... need time to go in more detail then. I think every
programming language have its pro n cons, like super
asynchronous communication pattern AJAX also have it's nature
limitation, bookmarking n back issue... can see from that all the element in this world have 2 face, like Ying Yang...

what to do with parking rate

parking rate will raise, that will increase my expenditure, in future driving car to company, RM180 + RM60 = RM240, if take another option, which by motocycle, there will be RM30 + RM10 = RM40, 240-40= RM200!!! so which one should i choose, car RM240 or motorcycle RM40??? car sure is more comfortable but will stuck in traffic jam, motorcycle sure can run away from traffic jam, but more dangerous n if rain then will suffer... b4 17 march have to inform MVC office whether i want that season parking or not... why so many critical decision to make recently, haiz....

Desaru
